86’Relief FAQ

1. How do I apply?

To be part of the 86'Relief Team, just send us a message letting us know you want to join. We need a copy of your resume and a valid ServSafe certificate. Once you send us these, we ask for your permission to contact your references and conduct a criminal background check. If you have any serious felonies on your background check, you will not be able to proceed. If you pass our reference and background check, we ask to you to come in for an interview.

2. What if I don't have a ServSafe certificate?

You must have a valid ServSafe certificate prior to working with us and we will reimburse you for the cost obtaining the certificate if you work with us for over 4 weeks or complete 4 assignments for our clients (whichever is sooner).

3. Can I decide my schedule and time off?

On each assignment you will have your normal days off during the week, but if you need additional time off during the assignment, please let us know in advance. Other than that, you can take vacation time whenever you need. We will just mark you as ``not available`` for the dates you provide us. Just remember you don't get paid if you're not working an assignment.
We will present you with the schedule, prior to you accepting the assignment. Please be aware that your shift times will change for each new assignment, so a flexible schedule is a must.

4. Am I employed by Maine Cater?

We offer the choice of being a W-2 employee through Maine Cater or as a 1099 Independent Contractor (``1099``). We will handle all of your taxes if you are a W-2 employee. If you are a 1099, we do not handle your taxes and you are responsible for paying them at the time of filing, but you get to deduct more expenses than you would if you were a W-2. We will send a 1099-MISC at the end of the fiscal year for your earnings with us. You do NOT need to be a business to file as a 1099. If you choose to be a 1099, you are still covered under our Workers Comp and General Liability Insurances and are under contract for each assignment.

5. How much do I make?

If you are an employee, you do not get to choose your assignments and will be paid a set hourly rate for all assignments. If you are a contractor, you can tell us what your desired hourly rate is, and we will try to get that for you. We recommend you base your rate on your skill set and experience level. Rates also depend how much you're willing to work for, and how much our clients are willing to pay per hour for the assignment. We set minimum rates for certain positions and experience level so don't think you're going to get low-balled. If you work more than 40 hours in a week, you'll get paid overtime for those extra hours. We pay you every week by direct deposit.

6. Transportation/ Assignment location

You must have a reliable car to work assignments. We try to present you with assignments that are near to where you reside, but sometimes assignments can be a little further away, so your transportation must be reliable.

7. Payday!

You will be paid every Friday (weekly pay) via direct deposit. We do not send paper checks, so you must have a bank account in your name. We request a copy of a voided check or documentation showing your name, account number and routing number to avoid any mistakes when completing our on-boarding documents. Copies of your pay stubs will be accessible through our payroll processors website.

8. Holidays

You can choose to either work on holidays, or take the time off. If you do work a holiday, you will be paid holiday pay of 1.5x the rate for all hours worked on that date. Our holidays are - New Year's eve, New Year's day, Easter, Memorial day, Independence day, Labor day, Thanksgiving day, Friday following Thanksgiving day, and Christmas day.

9. I LOVE my assignment

If you love where we sent you and they wish to hire you on a full-time basis within their company, you can ask us to help negotiate a job offer, or you can do it solo. It's pretty common for clients and employers to present job offers to our team.

10. Can other positions join the 86'Relief Team?

Yes! It's not just chefs that join the team. We have clients that ask us for help with FOH, management and dishwashers. All of the answers to the FAQ's apply to non-chef positions.

11. What type of establishments do I go to?

As every assignment is different, you must be comfortable with change. We work with hotels, restaurants, bars, bakeries, cafes etc, for all of their staffing needs.
